A Bet Worth a Finger
For starters, there is a soldier who is betting his little finger for a car of an old man that he can light his lighter 10 times without it missing once. The soldier seems to think that his little finger has done nothing for him. However, if he were to lose this then he would have trouble holding the glass that he is sipping out of. He would also lose the ability the perform certain manipulation tasks as easy as he does. These include typing, texting, etc. I am going to talk about typing as an occupation he might lose.
Typing is an unusual occupation, but technology is at the forefront of all armies now. It involves all fingers moving in all directions. If the soldier lost his little finger then he would definitely need to make some changes in typing to compensate for his loss. One strategy for this could be a different starting hand placement on the keyboard. This would allow the right hand (with all 5 fingers) to cover a larger area of the keyboard and the left hand to cover less. The soldier could also purchase a smaller keyboard so that finger abduction would be less. This would cause his ring finger to be able to take over the role of the little finger. In addition, he could go even further and get a voice recognition device so that all he has to do is speak and it will type the words for him. This is a little more advanced, but it is still available for people and is an option.
The woman of the man betting against the soldier has already had to compensate as she only has two fingers on one hand. Tasks this could affect include, holding a glass, gripping the steering wheel normally, brushing her teeth, etc. Manipulation of the fingers are vital to several occupations. The little finger is not commonly thought of as important, but it is.

I agree with your point that the sailor would struggle with typing. I also liked the idea about shifting the right hand in order to cover more space on the keyboard to compensate for the loss of the pinky on the left hand.
